What Are Our Meetings Like? PDF Print E-mail

Meetings take place on the third Friday night of each month at the Blue Heron Park Nature Center. They are open to the public, and we pride on making everyone feel comfortable no matter what they're level of experience with reptiles may be.  We also like to cater to all people interests by varying the meeting topics.  We blend a healthy mix of breeding/keeping and conservation talks, but then we also mix in some "how-to" topics in which we discuss anything from building a natural terrarium to an incubator for hatching out reptile eggs.  Then we have meeting nights where we feel we need to have a group discussion and open the floor for people's questions that they may have about husbandry, breeding, etc.  It is like a Q & A session where anything you are thinking about can be put out on the floor and discussed by the group.  Lastly, we love to plan a swap meet for one of the meetings each year.  Usually that will take place in the early fall when everyone has babies that they have hatched out.  It gives members a chance to trade animals/supplies for other things they might be interested in.

But we aren't just concerned about talking about reptiles ALL the time.  Our club is also about a family-type atmosphere where we find comradery important.  So we also plan events each year that help bring members closer.  We have a holiday party every year on a Saturday night in December.  We have food, music, friendly card games, etc.  But we also embrace the warm summer months by having an annual barbecue.  It is usually held at Blue Heron Park in the gazebo.  We order sandwiches and have people bring their favorite dish.

In addition to monthly meetings and events, we plan outdoor excursions and other field trips.  We also host and participate in community events such as pond cleanups, restoration projects, reptile & amphibian expos, and herp research.

So if all of these things sound like something that interest you and your family, come down and check us out.  Meetings are open to the public for free, and if you decide you enjoy what we do, then we encourage you to support our club and join.  But you'll never know if you don't come down for a visit, so we hope you'll check out our event calendar and come to our next meeting!

P.S. Don't be afraid to walk into the meeting and introduce yourself.  We will be more than happy to meet you!

Sincerely,

Havey J. Bird Jr.
